Our Conference Theme

What if we aren’t planning to survive? …

and who is planning our future anyway?

We face a complex web of economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges in our communities. We feel unsettled and overwhelmed yet we are also energized by a sense of possibility and future. We endeavour to make a difference. In a world that is constantly changing, building resilient people and resilient communities is vital. We are inventive, resourceful, creative, skilful and clever people who notice what is happening in our communities. We strive for purposeful decision-making and action. We see a better way to create our future together. We gather to draw on our diversity of perspectives as

 • professional and aspiring planners

• community leaders

• developers and builders

• other community and development professions

• non-governmental organizations

We are designing an experience with this assumption in mind: collectively we have solutions—we need to see them, see how they connect, and determine how to act on them.

How can you participate?

For most participants, this experience will look and feel different from the usual conference. Our assumption is that tapping into the collective wisdom in the room is what we need at this time. We will be hosting conversations using a variety of tools including open space, world café and other tricks we have up our sleeve. The big name speakers for the conference will be you … our wide range of delegates! Although there won’t be the standard call for presenters, in the spirit of an unconference, anyone wishing to make a presentation will be able to do so. There are two formal opportunities to present your ideas:

1. APPI 15 in 5: A short and fast PowerPoint presentation consisting of 15 slides of 20 seconds each for a total of five minutes, based on the “PechaKucha” style.

2. Invite an audience: Bring a poster, a small number of copies of your work, an idea or a question. Whatever you need to connect with others. We’ll set it up for you.

Beyond these two specific opportunities, there will be ample time to share your ideas and create new ones—it just won’t be refereed and predetermined ahead of time. There may also be some opportunities for video submissions and other crazy stuff.

It’s time to name the elephant in the room. Or the herd of elephants, if that’s the case. Or at least to point out that there are many versions of what planning is, and ask what it could be?

October 17-20, we gather for the 2010 APPI Conference in Lake Louise to:

• explore how to renew and sustain resilient communities

• develop new ways of working together within our communities

• create new connections and relationships for future action

• discover what planning for the future means in this world of uncertainty

• create opportunities to have the conversations you want to have

There is a transformation afoot … and you’re invited.
